Installation & Requirements
System Requirements
- WordPress Version: 5.9 or higher
- PHP Version: 7.4 or higher
- MySQL: 5.6 or higher recommended
Installation Steps
- Log in to your WordPress Dashboard.
- Navigate to Plugins > Add New.
- Search for "Media Tracker".
- Click Install Now and then Activate.
Alternatively, you can upload the media-tracker.zip file via Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin.
Overview Dashboard
The Overview tab acts as your command center, providing a high-level summary of your media library's health.
What You'll See
- Unused Media Stats: Total count and estimated file size of unused media items.
- Duplicate Media Count: Number of potential duplicate images detected.
- Recent Unused Items: A quick list of the most recently uploaded files that aren't being used.
Quick Actions
- Scan Unused Media: Go to the Unused Media tab and click Scan Now to collect fresh data.
- Scan Duplicates: Open the Duplicate tab and click Scan For Duplicates to run detection.
- Remove All (Unused): Use the bulk remove button for safe cleanup after reviewing items and taking a backup.
- Refresh Dashboard: After a scan, Overview updates automatically; transient cache may delay updates briefly.
Media Statistics
Statistics on the Overview page reflect the latest completed scan. You will see:
- Unused Count: Number of attachments not referenced anywhere.
- Unused Size: Combined file size of unused items.
- Duplicate Count: Number of probable duplicate images.
- Image Type Breakdown: Counts by format (JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, SVG, WebP) and the Total Images in your library.
- Mime Type Insights: Usage/size breakdown by mime type for images, documents, and videos (future enhancements).
Dashboard stats use transient caching to optimize performance, preventing repeated database queries on every page load.
Recent Unused Media
The Recent Unused list shows a small snapshot of the latest unused attachments (updated after each scan). From here you can:
- Quickly preview which files are currently unused.
- Navigate to the full Unused Media tab to decide whether to delete or keep items.
Most Used Media
The Most Used section highlights the assets most frequently referenced across your site. This helps you:
- Identify critical assets so they are not removed by mistake.
- Prioritize optimization and content planning around high-impact media.
Usage counts are aggregated from posts, pages, and references across page builders, ACF, and WooCommerce.
Unused Media List
The core feature of Media Tracker. This tool scans your entire database to find attachments that are not referenced in your content.
Supported Content Types
Media Tracker checks usage in:
- Posts, Pages, and Custom Post Types
- Page Builders: Elementor, Divi, Gutenberg, Classic Editor
- Plugins: WooCommerce (Product Galleries), ACF (Image Fields)
How to Use
- Navigate to the Unused Media tab.

Duplicate Media Detection
Duplicate images waste server space and clutter your library. Media Tracker uses advanced content hashing to find images that are visually identical, even if they have different filenames.
Features
- Smart Hashing: Detects duplicates based on image content, not just names.
- Grouping: Displays duplicates in groups for easy comparison.
- Sorting: Sort results by usage count to safely keep the most used version.
How to Use
Click the Scan For Duplicates button to initiate the detection process. Once completed, you can review and delete redundant copies.
